Designer Tracy Reese is always a breath of fresh air and her latest NYFW presentation was no exception–both literally and figuratively. Hosted in an outdoor fairytale garden affair in an actual cemetery, her NYFW Spring 2017 show almost made me forget about the lack of diversity on the runway.

She also made a major statement celebrating the beauty of real women, casting a mix of models and everyday women of all shades, shapes, ages and hair textures, including Saturday Night Live’Sasheer Zamata, writer Susan Fales-Hill and Kristi Henderson, co-founder of the Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network.

I also knew we were going to witness all sorts of hair magic when we learned Cantu Beauty was making its NYFW debut at the show. Lead hairstylist Bok Hee did not disappoint, creating a fairytale presentation for the collection. Hair looks included everything from crowned afros, tousled knots, twist outs and undone ‘dos that we could all recreate at home for real world slay.

Bok explained the inspiration for the looks came from a collaboration between her and Tracy, which evolved into creating an innocent, perfectly imperfect vibe using strategically placed flowers and hair accessories. “Just easy, so they don’t look like they are done.”

While checking out the looks backstage, I also caught up with Cantu global stylist Maria Antoinette who said that working with Tracy Reese was the perfect partnership as they shared a mutual passion to embrace the collectiveness of women.

“The whole feel of the show is about effortless, natural. It’s embracing nature with natural, so it’s being able to just be free as women,” she said. “The way your hair grows, embrace that. Everything is done in a really chic way, but it’s also done in a very effortless way. That just coincides so well with our brand, because we’re about effortless, we’re about making it easy.”

And, as far as favorite hair moments? Maria said, “There is an afro with baby’s breath that is calling my name! But, I’m drawn to that because she looks like me. I feel like you are going to find someone that looks like you [in the show]. I think that embraces the whole fashion part because you can actually see yourself in that outfit.”
