The trailer for Sorry to Bother You just dropped today and this two-minute taste is as hilariously mind-bending and culturally provocative as the Sundance reviews have been hinting at. Starring an eclectically kick ass cast, including Lakeith Stanfield and Tessa Thompson, Terry Crews, Danny Glover and Omari Hardwick, we get a brief intro into rapper Boots Riley’s directorial debut world that almost makes Donald Glover’s hit FX series Atlanta seem tame. (Who knew that could even be possible?)

Our new fave quirky oddball Lakeith stars as Cassius Green in what the film bills an “alternate present-day version of Oakland” where he “discovers a magical key to professional success, propelling him into a macabre universe.”

The “key” just happens to be using his “White” voice. Laughing out loud! I’m not ready yet for the think pieces, but as a Black woman, I have long been indoctrinated in the power of using my “White” voice. It’s an unspoken “talent” that can open all sorts of doors in everything America — from corporate to mainstream, or, in LaKeith’s case, telemarketing. But, it’s also creepy AF when you peep that it’s not even his own voice.

The most intriguing thing here, though, is we (or at least I) have no idea what’s going on. All we know is that we want to see more. The on-screen chemistry alone between Lakeith and Tessa’s character as his girlfriend rocking a Kelis-esque crop of color-melted curls already has me sold. And, not sure what he’s pushing as a “power seller”, but pair that with his dubbed white voice (courtesy of comedian David Cross) and the idea that some of the scenes could be from his imagination, and it can’t help but conjure comparisons to Get Out. I am so here for it.

The film doesn’t hit theaters until July 6, so patience will definitely be a virtue. Until then, press play below to get your first glance into this crazy new world.
