After a week’s buildup of promos, anticipation and wondering whether he would even show, comedian Dave Chappelle appeared last night on Saturday Night Live in what promised to be one of the blackest episodes of the season with musical guest A Tribe Called Quest.

Chappelle opened the show with a hilarious and powerful opening monologue touching on the election, race, Black Lives Matter and Trump.  “We’ve actually elected an internet troll as president.”

He also touched on the hope that came from attending a nearly-all black party a few weeks ago in the West Wing of the White House that once denied Black visitors.

“It was beautiful… I saw how happy everybody was, these people who had been historically disenfranchised, and it made me hopeful and it made me feel proud to be an American and it made me very happy about the prospects of our country,” said. “So, in that spirit, I’m wishing Donald Trump luck and I’m going to give him a chance. And we, the historically disenfranchised, demand that he give us one too.”
