I am in no way a comic buff. All I know about Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa aka Black Panther is what I saw in Captain America: Civil War. But, can I please take a moment to bask in the amazingness that just dropped this weekend? If the teaser is anything like what’s hitting theaters in February 2018, I am about to stan out.
Just a week after getting my life with Wonder Woman, I damn near had my wig snatched watching this fine specimen hailing from Wakanda. The trailer is black AF. It’s giving Coming To America vibes with a whole country of cultural greatness and costumes to match. Not only is this mythical African country (no, you can not buy tix to get there) the source of the strongest metal on Marvel’s earth – it is also a beautiful celebration and testament to all things that defy “white” expectations of us. Like education, wealth, technology, etc.
Then, there’s that poster that is pissing off the same fools who were mad about Dear White People. Sho-nuff it’s a nod to the power and legacy of Huey P. Newton. It’s also a nod to the fact that the superhero is also a king-to-be. Why wouldn’t he have his own throne? I mean, he is a Black superhero who was not manufactured, but born great.
Boseman is also joined on-screen by a kick-ass cast including Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker and Danai Gurira while Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogle works behind the camera.
We have seen studios make plays toward diversity and inclusion — and our dollars. But, as long as they get it right, I am not mad at all. The tone in this trailer seems to be right on point. The scenes are beautiful, epic and empowering. And, definitely costume-worthy. (Hey, don’t act like you haven’t seen the memes).
February 2018 can not come soon enough is too damn far away. Until then, press play below.
