I had the honor of serving as keynote for the first annual Twin Cities Natural Hair & Beauty Expo in Minnesota earlier this month. It was both a blessing and a challenge to head back to the city that raised me to talk about the changing hair and beauty landscape as it relates to women of color and natural hair.
I was honored to check in with old friends and make new ones after speaking on the need to love yourself no matter what stage you are in your hair journey. Yes, the natural hair trend is booming, but it is very much a trend and it will die down. So, whatever your hair choice is, make sure you’re doing it for you and not the ‘gram. It’s also important to note that Black women spend upwards of $8 billion annually on beauty products – $2 billion in hair, alone — and even with the global natural hair movement, the city still remains under-served when it comes to getting products on shelves and access to new releases.
With at least one thousand people flowing through the event produced by Hair Hunny’s Tephanie Delaney and Fro Real No Lye’s Kelley Eubanks, I’m hoping more brands take note.
