August Wilson‘s Tony Award-winning play Fences is coming to the silver screen this Christmas with Denzel Washington and Viola Davis bringing their star power to the film. Washington and Davis are both reprising their roles from the 2010 Broadway revival – where they won Tony Awards. Davis is already being considered for the 2017 Oscars for her performance.
The film also stars other actors from the Broadway production, including Mykelti Williamson and Russell Hornsby, along with Jovan Adepo, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Saniyya Sydney.
Prior to his death in 2005, Wilson insisted that none of his plays be produced without an African American director — “not on the basis of rac,e but on the basis of culture.[…] The job requires someone who shares the specifics of the culture of black Americans.” Washington, himself, stood up to the challenge and serves as both producer and director of the film which also uses the screenplay Wilson originally wrote.
Fences hits theatres December 25. Press play below to watch the official trailer and let us know if this is on your own must-watch list.
