Yes, today is the day we’ve been either dreading, looking forward to or can’t way ’til it’s over. Any way you look at it, though, the right for women and people of color to vote holds more weight than the circus of an election we’ve had this cycle. So, it was great to see former Hamilton star Daveed Diggs trade bars with Black Thought from The Roots on the election during his appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night (Nov. 7).
After Fallon asked the Tony award winner (who now plays Tracee Ellis Ross’ brother on Black-ish) to kick a quick freestyle. “Let’s just spit some bars about voting,” Diggs responded, and got into some verses with Black Thought on the importance of voting and getting our voices heard.
The right to vote ain’t always been given to every citizen. Not until 1920 did it include any women. And not until 1965 if you exhibit melanin. And even now, they try to stop us when they telling us lies about deadlines and who can and who can’t and all this voter registration miseducation, I’d be damned if after all that blood and fighting for the right to be counted I don’t get out my bed and fill out that ballot.
